Joel Edgerton is about to experience some multiversal madness after signing on to star in Apple’s series adaptation of Dark Matter. Based on the novel by Blake Crouch, the Dark Matter series spans nine episodes of science-fiction insanity as a man attempts to save his family after getting lost among an ocean of impossibilities.
According to the project’s official description, Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (Edgerton), a “physicist, professor and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to a nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of mind-bending realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”
Crouch adapts the book and will serve as an executive producer and showrunner for Apple’s Dark Matter series. In addition to his starring role, Edgerton executive produces alongside Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl of Matt Tolmach Productions. Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Transporter 2) directs the first four episodes.
Edgerton’s next small-screen role is for the Disney+ Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Edgerton is reprising his role as Owen Lars for the series, which also stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christiansen, Rupert Friend, Benny Safdie, Kumail Nanjiani, Simone Kessell, Sung Kang, Maya Erskine, and Bonnie Piesse. Edgerton is currently filming The Boys in the Boat on the feature film front for director George Clooney. Set in the 1930s, Boys in the Boat centers on the University of Washington’s rowing team, from their Depression-era beginnings to winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Hopping through realities can twist your world up pretty well. I hope Jason can make it back to his original timeline before his family meets an untimely end due to his meddling with matters beyond his control.
