While The Goldbergs has not been officially renewed for a tenth season, series star Wendi McLendon-Covey has signed a new deal to return to the series which just about secures the show a spot on ABC’s schedule next season.
It’s ideal for a series that is this long in its run to secure its onscreen talent. ABC recently went through this with Ellen Pompeo before Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for next season and the same happened at The CW with The Flash star, Grant Gustin. They want to make sure that they have their main lead locked in place before making a renewal decision.
Should The Goldbergs be renewed, which is likely, the show will join an exclusive club of live-action broadcast comedies that hit the double digits. Currently, The Goldbergs is the longest-running live-action network comedy currently on the air. Per Deadline, exact figures on McLendon-Covey’s were made public but it’s said to be a sizable pay increase with an option to return for an eleventh season if that should happen.
Wendi McLendon-Covey is essentially the star of The Goldbergs now after the show dealt with a pretty stressful year. The series lost two core members of its cast when George Segal, who Albert “Pops’ Solomon on the show, passed away last spring, and Jeff Garlin, who played Murray Goldberg, departed the series after multiple misconduct allegations went public. The Goldbergs weathered both of those storms and continued to be a reliable ratings performer for ABC.
