Jared Leto is known for committed and eclectic performances but, as it turns out, he hasn’t seen many of them. At least not in the last 22 years. The actor is admitting he hasn’t watched one of his movies since Requiem for A Dream in 2000.
During an interview on UK’s Radio X with host Chris Moyles, Leto was busy promoting his upcoming film Morbius and he revealed that he hasn’t watched one of his own movies in over two decades. The last time he saw one of his films was at Cannes in 2000 when Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for A Dream was screened there and the director made him sit through the screening. The actor doesn’t detail why he hasn’t seen one of his films since but it’s actually pretty normal for most performers to say this. Some of them tend to be hyper-critical of their own performances so they decide to not watch themselves on screen. Other actors who have expressed this include Reese Witherspoon, Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem, Meryl Streep, and many others.
By the way, what a final film of his to view. Requiem for A Dream continues to stick with me and I actually find it very difficult to watch in the best way possible. It’s an unflinching look at drug addiction and how it can severely alter physical and emotional states. Throw in some of that signature Aronofsky style and it gives you an intoxicating and hypnotic journey into a very bleak world. In the film, based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Hubert Selby Jr., four characters are followed as their addictions cause them to become imprisoned in a world of delusion and desperation. As the film progresses, each character deteriorates, and their reality is overtaken by delusion, resulting in catastrophe. The film also stars Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans.
