New Amsterdam to end with shortened season 5 on NBC

NBC’s medical drama New Amsterdam will be coming back for a fifth season but with that announcement comes the news that it will also be the series’ last. The Ryan Eggold-led show will be back for a shortened season 5 that will consist of 13-episodes.

The renewal was actually originally a part of a three-year pickup that the series received after its second season. The 13-episode order will be its shortest and it will bring the show’s total to 92 episodes across five seasons. New Amsterdam came out of the first development cycle for NBC following the massive success of This Is Us. The show has remained in its same 10:00 PM Tuesday slot since its launch. Per Deadline, New Amsterdam got off to a solid ratings start during the 2018-19 season but it has slipped in its numbers and now ranks below most established NBC dramas. Given the costs of a series as it gets older, the economics made it difficult for NBC to keep the show going if numbers didn’t improve. However, despite a dwindling showing, New Amsterdam is still a respectable performer, pulling in a 1.13 rating in the 18-49 demo and 7.2 million viewers in Live+7 and multi-platform viewing this season.

Created and executive produced by David Schulder and directed/executive produced by Peter Horton, New Amsterdam stars Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin, a real-life doctor of News Amsterdam, one of the country’s oldest public hospitals. Goodwin came in with the goal of reforming the hospital and tearing up its bureaucracy to provide better care to patients. The series also stars Freema Agyeman, Michelle Forbes, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, and Tyler Labine. Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, had this to say about the show’s run:

In its current fourth season, Max, who had left his position as medical director of New Amsterdam to be with Dr. Sharpe (Agyeman) in the U.K., has returned to challenge his successor, the bureaucratic new director Dr. Veronica Fuentes (Forbes), who has been undoing the changes that Max fought hard to implement.
