Ever since his career was on the rise in the 1980s, Sam Raimi has wanted to direct comic book movies. When he couldn’t land the job to direct either a Batman movie or a film based on the character The Shadow, he decided to create his own superhero – and the result was the 1990 classic Darkman (watch it HERE). Twelve years later, Sam Raimi brought us Spider-Man, and returned to direct two sequels. Just in time for the twentieth anniversary of his first Spider-Man movie, he has returned to the comic book world to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is set to reach theatres on May 6th. Speaking with Empire, Raimi confirmed that he would be interested in directing more comic book movies, especially if they gave him the chance to work with characters he missed out on before.
Raimi said,
I’ve always loved Batman. If I ever saw the Bat-Signal up in the air, I’d come running. If I heard that deep, gurgling laugh of The Shadow coming from the darkness, I would also tentatively step outside.”
Fifteen years have passed since the release of his Spider-Man 3, and Raimi would still like to make another Spider-Man movie… in fact, he’d choose Spider-Man over doing a Doctor Strange sequel.
Spider-Man would be ahead of Doctor Strange, but I don’t want to put him down the list!”
Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy recently got a follow-up within Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought back Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and a few of his villains. Raimi said he was honored to see that happen, as
it’s like someone said, ‘You know your old friends that have passed away? We’ve found a way to bring them back for a brief time.’”
I think Raimi has the perfect style and sensibilities for comic book movies. I was very happy when I heard he was going to be directing Spider-Man, and hyped again twenty years later when it was announced he would be directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Anything he makes, I will be there to watch.
The screenplay for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was written by Jade Halley Bartlett and Loki head writer Michael Waldron. Benedict Cumberbatch is back as Doctor Strange, and he’s joined in the cast by Benedict Wong as Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch, and new addition Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, a.k.a. Miss America. Raimi regular Bruce Campbell is expected to make an appearance as well.
How do you feel about Sam Raimi directing more Spider-Man, or any other comic book movies?
