The Batman: Director Matt Reeves says Robin could appear in the sequel

The Batman is currently dominating the box office and dazzling fans all around the world and some of the fanbase is already thinking about what comes next. Director Matt Reeves is playing around with the sequel hype a bit by suggesting that Batman’s famous sidekick Robin could make an appearance in the follow-up.

While making an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves discussed the possibility of Robin showing up in the sequel and he said it’s something that could maybe happen but he would want to develop the proper emotional stakes for the character:

“Maybe. We’ll just say maybe. I don’t know. Here’s the thing, I have a lot of ideas about what I want to do. I’m not sure what the next story is. For me, whatever that story’s going to be, it’s going to be to take these characters — and specifically Batman’s character — and put them in some kind of emotional jeopardy. So when you talk about what you’re talking about, there may be a really interesting story. There’d have to be emotional stakes to get drawn into that character’s story.””I don’t want that character to become a cypher. I don’t want to be like, ‘Okay, so we saw it wasn’t an origin tale, but you know what, that was kind of [Batman’s] origins and now he’s just perfect.’ No, you need to test the character again and again and again. And for me, yeah, there might be something in that. I don’t know. There’s a deep-dive that already happened at the beginning and now I’m gonna have to deep-dive again if we have the chance to make another one and so we shall see.”

Robin made his first appearance in 1940’s Detective Comics #38 and established himself as a popular sidekick in the comics. Several people have donned the Robin persona with Dick Grayson being the first and arguably most popular person to take up the mantle. Grayson was an acrobat who, like Batman, witnessed his parents’ death at a young age. Over time, Grayson would have a falling out with Batman which led to him becoming a solo hero named Nightwing. Another popular Robin named Jason Todd was a headstrong person who used aggressive tactics in the face of his enemies. Jason Todd was brutally murdered by the Joker and was resurrected as the anti-hero Red Hood. A third Robin, Tim Drake, figured out Batman’s secret identity all on his own and he’s considered to be the most intelligent character to step into Robin’s mask. Drake would later become the solo superhero Red Robin. The character even took on a female persona in the form of Stephanie Brown, Tim Drake’s primary love interest. She is the only female Robin in the main continuity. Lastly, Damian Wayne is the fifth and current Robin and is the only version of the character to be biologically related to Batman since he’s Bruce Wayne’s son. Needless to say, Reeves has some options when it comes to adapting the character for his film series if he chooses to.

Robin made his film debut in 1966’s Batman film played by Burt Ward, who also played the character on the 60’s television series. Chris O’Donnell brought the character to life as Dick Grayson in 1995’s Batman Forever and 1997’s Batman & Robin. Lastly, while he never got to put on the costume, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s first name was revealed to be Robin during the closing moments of The Dark Knight Rises.
