Mortal Kombat may have received mixed reactions upon its release last year, but it was also HBO Max’s most streamed movie of the year, and you know what that means — sequel! Mortal Kombat 2 was confirmed last month with Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) attached to pen the script, and Lewis Tan is pumped to see what’s next for the franchise.
Lewis Tan played Cole Young in Mortal Kombat, a new character who had some mysterious ties to the mythology of the series. While speaking with Film Updates, Lewis Tan said that he hopes Mortal Kombat 2 is bigger and bloodier than the first movie.
We got an amazing writer, Jeremy Slater, who wrote Moon Knight for Marvel, onboard. His writing is really good and he’s really smart. I’m excited to see what he develops, because it’s a tricky one with Mortal Kombat. There are so many storylines. It’s very complex; there are so many characters. It’s a hard one to get done in a two-hour period or an hour and a half. Hopefully, they can make the sequel a little bit longer and we can explore more characters and more themes, and just make it even bloodier and even bigger than the first one. That’s our plan.
Although Mortal Kombat did receive mixed reviews, it was a lot of fun when it cut loose with hard-hitting and bloody fights. If the sequel can expand on that, we’ll hopefully be in for a good time, especially with the first film teasing the arrival of Johnny Cage. There has also been talk of potential Mortal Kombat spin-offs in development for HBO Max as well.
Lewis Tan can currently be seen starring alongside Iko Uwais in Fistful of Vengeance, a feature film that serves as a follow up for Netflix’s Wu Assassins series. “Super-powered assassin Kai and friends Lu Xin and Tommy track a killer from San Francisco’s Chinatown to Thailand to avenge the death of a loved one,” reads Netflixs synopsis. “But their hunt soon entangles them with old enemies, a mysterious billionaire and an ancient mystical force bent on taking over the world.” Aside from bigger and bloodier, what are you hoping to see from Mortal Kombat 2?
