Spider-Man: No Way Home has achieved another remarkable box office feat. According to early industry estimates per Deadline, Spider-Man: No Way Home has topped the $760.5 million box office take of James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar to become the third-highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has grossed $760.9 million after pulling in $1.6 million on Valentine’s Day. The film accomplished the feat in 60 days during its ninth week of release during a pure theatrical window. For comparison’s sake, it took Avatar nine months of release to reach $749.7 million before scoring an additional $10.7 million during a 2010 re-release that brought its total to $760.5 million.
Avatar can still claim bragging rights as the highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office with a gross of $2.84 billion. Avengers: Endgame stole that crown for a short stint when it grossed $2.79 billion worldwide but Avatar had a release in China during the pandemic that boosted its global figure. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the sixth-highest-grossing film worldwide with a running total of $1.8 billion.
Placing third on the all-time domestic box office chart is likely the last milestone will achieve during its impressive run. 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens tops the list with $936.6 million while Avengers: Endgame is second with $858.3 million. Spidey won’t have enough in the tank to reach those heights but no one is complaining about its performance. Most box office experts think Spider-Man: No Way Home will end its domestic run at about $785 million.
Are YOU surprised Spider-Man: No Way Home topped Avatar at the domestic box office? It’s not even close when you get to the global box office, but at least in North America, Spider-Man fans and more have been out in full force since the movie premiered in December.
