A Criminal Minds reboot was announced to be headed to Paramount+ but reports last summer, started by comments from series star Paget Brewster, made it seem like the project may have been dead. Despite what was said, President of Paramount+ Original Scripted Series Nicole Clemens says that the project is still very much alive.
Via Deadline, Clemens says that “We are still very much in development on Criminal Minds. We’ll have more to share on that soon but it is alive and well.” According to Clemens, the delay of the reboot has come down to the executive shuffle at the company which saw her take on a new role at the streamer last summer.
The news broke last February that Paramount+ planned on bringing back the popular procedural series, which ran for 15 seasons on CBS. The plan for the news series was to get the team back together and have them investigate a single case over 10 episodes. Plans for this seem to stall when Paget, who played Emily Prentiss on the show for nearly 200 episodes, said the reboot was “unlikely.” Maybe the corporate shuffle at the streamer gave her that impression but it appears it’s still on track.
Criminal Minds, created by Jeff Davis, followed a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit. They use behavioral analysis and profiling to investigate crimes and find perpetrators as the show tells the story of the team working on various cases while also tackling aspects of their personal lives. The series ended its 15-season run last year and featured an ensemble cast across that run that included Mandy Patinkin, Shemar Moore, Joe Mantegna, Aisha Tyler, Matthew Gray Gubler, Thomas Gibson, Lola Glaudini, Adam Rodriguez, AJ Cook, Brewster, and more.
Not only was Criminal Minds a hit on CBS but its first 12 seasons that stream on Netflix have proven to be a hit for the streamer. Criminal Minds was the third-most-streamed series in 2020 on Netflix behind The Office and Grey’s Anatomy with 590 million hours viewed. The series also spawned two spin-offs: Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, which ran for only one season, and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, which ran for two seasons.
