Moonfall’s theatrical release has been canceled in Canada

In a move that is likely to affect some of the film’s box office potential, Roland Emmerich’s new disaster film Moonfall will not receive a theatrical release in Canada.

Distributor Mongrel Media actually announced the decision on Friday with a spokeswoman saying the choice was made because of the uncertainty over the recent closures of theaters in Canada. The statement reads, “For planning reasons, decisions had to be made while cinemas [in Canada] were closed.” The interesting thing about this decision is that things are starting to look a bit more certain regarding cinemas in Canada.

Theaters in Quebec are set to reopen next week and theater owners are a little upset that Moonfall won’t be a part of that equation. Daniel Séguin, senior vice-president of national operations at Cineplex, said “We are disappointed to learn that the distributor of the film Moonfall has no plans for a theatrical release in Canada.” Echoing that sentiment was the president of Cinémas Guzzo, Vincent Guzzo, who called the film’s marketing strategy in Canada illogical. The film was also shot in Montreal in 2020, making it the perfect release for Canadian audiences but now they will be missing out until the film is available for home viewing. As of now, no release date has been set for Moonfall on video-on-demand.

Per the film’s official synopsis, “In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Academy Award ® winner Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson, Midway) and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley, Game of Thrones) believes her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.”
