Spider-Man: No Way Home denied any BAFTA nominations

Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home might be raking in the big bucks at the box office, but it recently found its webs snipped after failing to meet the “eligibility criteria” for the BAFTA awards.

A spokesperson for BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) said: “‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ did not meet the eligibility criteria for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 and therefore did not qualify for entry. As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to Round One voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles, and the film was not made available by the distributor.”

For clarification, Round One closed on January 3rd.

While an entry for Spider-Man: No Way Home exists on BAFTA View, the movie itself is unavailable for viewing. When you go to the page, all you find is a trailer for the film. Obviously, a trailer is not enough to make a movie eligible for the BAFTA awards. When Spider-Man: No Way Home was proposed, Sony and Marvel asked that it be considered for Best Picture and Best Special Effects.

Spider-Man: No Way Home recently dominated the box office for the fourth weekend in a row, adding $33M to its domestic total for an amazing $668.7M earned. When adding this total to other markets from across the globe, Spider-Man: No Way Home has webbed up a Peter-tingling total of $1.536+B in worldwide receipts.

Welp, there’s still a chance that Spider-Man: No Way Home could web up an Oscar nomination or two despite this no-show at the BAFTA.
