We first heard of the World War II horror movie Warhunt when it was one of the few productions that were able to continue filming when the pandemic began, following government health guidelines to complete the shoot in Riga, the capital of Latvia. The film’s star Mickey Rourke even reported to set earlier than originally intended, because Latvia was closing its borders and he had to rush there to beat the closure. Next month, Saban Films will be giving us the chance to see the result of the cast and crew’s hard work, as they will be releasing the film to theatres, digital, and VOD on January 21, 2022. To help you decide whether or not Warhunt is a movie you’d like to check out next month, we have embedded the trailer above.

Directed by Mauro Borrelli (The Recall), who also wrote the screenplay with Reggie Keyohara III (The Recall) and Scott Svatos (The Ghostmaker), Warhunt stars Rourke (Sin City), Robert Knepper (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), and Jackson Rathbone (Twilight). Here’s the synopsis:

1945. A US military cargo plane loses control and violently crashes behind enemy lines in the middle of the German black forest. Immediately ruthless Major Johnson (Mickey Rourke) sends a squad of his bravest soldiers on a rescue mission to retrieve the top secret material the plane was carrying. Led by Sergeant Brewer (Robert Knepper) and Walsh (Jackson Rathbone), the soldiers venture deep into the forest near the crash site. They soon discover hanged Nazi soldiers and other dead bodies bearing ancient, magical symbols. Suddenly their compasses fail, their perceptions twist and straying from the group leads to profound horror as they are attacked by a powerful, supernatural force. Fighting for the dainty and struggling to survive they must uncover the shocking truth behind the force before the Nazis and do everything they can to remove all evidence it ever existed, even at the cost of their own lives.

Warhunt was produced by Julie Zaytseva of Forma Pro Films, Adel Nur of Atomik Content, and Yu-Fai Suen.

Borrelli describes his film as a “wild ride with powerful images; but also a great metaphor about war and its evil, told with powerful iconic characters.”

Warhunt has my attention, and I will probably be watching it before January is over.
