<– WARNING: This article contains minor plot spoilers for Marvel’s Hawkeye –>
During the exciting season finale for Marvel’s Hawkeye, we learned that there’s more to Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini) than anyone had assumed. Laura has appeared periodically throughout the MCU timeline in select films and has acted as an anchor for Clint Barton and the Avengers during their times of need. Now, thanks to Hawkeye, we know that Laura has a fascinating past all her own. How’s that? Well, Laura Barton was once known as Agent 19, or, for those of you versed in Marvel Comics lore, Bobbi Morse, aka Mockingbird. It stands to reason that Bobbi changed her name when she decided to settle down with Clint, but there’s a chance that she’s still doing undercover work for Nick Fury in her spare time. Could this be the beginning of a new story? Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas certainly hopes so.
While talking with Marvel.com about the twist revealed in the final episode of the series, Thomas expressed his excitement for being given the chance to uncover Laura’s true identity:
“That’s what’s exciting about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said Thomas. It’s Marvel, and the comics are so deep. It’s a universe. What I love is that these ideas could get introduced as we were sort of prepping the show.”
“We’ve seen her over these years as his wife, and there was obviously a desire [to expand her backstory],” Thomas elaborated. “We should know more about her. There’s more to her than just staying at home with the kids. It was a fun little thing to tease out over the season and again a nice little payoff that hopefully promises more of a character planted at the end.”
As a major fan of both Linda Cardellini and Mockingbird, I would love for Marvel to explore her character in some sort of spinoff series. I could easily see the secret agent angle working for the series. Maybe Marvel could extend Samuel L. Jackson’s contract to get him involved as well. While Laura has established herself as a loving mother as well as an understanding and supportive partner, I know she can and has done more than Marvel is letting on. A prequel series would work perfectly for her character and would be a real treat for fans who freaked out over the reveal of her past as a covert badass. Thankfully, Marvel is known for taking the temperature of the room and acting accordingly, so it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibilities that we’ll see a Mockingbird spinoff down the line.
