Although there was little doubt, it was officially announced earlier this month that Destin Daniel Cretton would be returning to write and direct a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The first installment included more than a few legendary Asian actors, including Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh, and if Cretton has his way, we might see more in the upcoming sequel. While speaking with CinemaBlend, Destin Daniel Cretton was asked which legendary Asian actor he’s like to cast in Shang-Chi 2 and it turns out that he wants one of the biggest: Jackie Chan.
I mean, if we could ever get Jackie [Chan] into a movie that would be a lifelong dream of mine.
CinemaBlend’s Law Sharma suggested that they put that idea out into the universe, with Destin Daniel Cretton responding, “Yeah. Let’s put it out there.” Stranger things have certainly happened; in fact, Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu, expressed a desire to play the title character on Twitter shortly after the project was first announced and was officially cast less than a year later.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings did already pay homage to the work of Jackie Chan, most notably in the fight scene on the bus, but it would be a real treat to see him step into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is all wishful thinking at this point, but would you like to see Jackie Chan in the Shang-Chi sequel?
“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige when the sequel was announced. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray last month.
