For those of you that are still recovering from the emotionally-crippling finale of HBO’s Six Feet Under, I’ve got some devastating news. You might not want to put those tissues away just yet because a Six Feet Under follow-up is in the early stages of development.
According to Variety, a writer has yet to be attached to the project. Furthermore, there is no plotline to speak of at this time. The Six Feet Under follow-up could be a reboot or something akin to a sequel series following up on existing characters from the show in the present day. Original series creator Alan Ball and executive producers Bob Greenblatt and David Janollari are all attached to executive produce the new project.
For the love of everything that is still good in this world, HBO, no. The final episode of Six Feet Under is without question one of the best series enders in the history of television, so why ruin it? Haven’t you taken enough from us after the final season of Game of Thrones? Heh. I’m just kidding. Or am I?
Six Feet Under aired from 2001-2005 and starred Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Mathew St. Patrick, and Rachel Griffiths. Richard Jenkins also stars as the late Nate Fisher Sr., who dies in the opening episode but visits family members in flashbacks and imaginary conversations. The show is considered by many to be one of the best television dramas of all time. It received 53 total Emmy nominations during its outstanding run, winning nine. Six Feet Under also dug up several Golden Globe awards for its absurd excellence, including the award for best drama in 2002.
After Six Feet Under was dead and buried, Ball went on to create True Blood and Here and Now for HBO. While I admit that the idea of Ball going back to the well for a Six Feet Under follow-up intrigues me, I can’t help but feel like they’re going to have to present a rock-solid idea to get fans of the original series on board. This show is sacred to a lot of people. That might sound like an exaggeration, but I assure you that it’s not. I hope they come up with some truly incredible ideas before announcing more details. We’ll be sure to let you know what comes of this threat… I mean news.
