Eternals: Angelina Jolie doesn’t want a standalone Thena movie

Despite being an Oscar winner and one of the best actresses of her generation, Angelina Jolie’s Thena doesn’t take the lead in Marvel’s Eternals. In fact, in an ensemble of ten god-like superheroes, Jolie fills a more supporting role compared to the other performers in the film but it appears she would have it no other way. When asked if she would be interested in a Thena standalone movie, Jolie says she’d rather stay a part of the ensemble in a future Marvel project.

In an interview with Brazil’s CinePOP, via Collider, Jolie expressed that she doesn’t know what is in store for her character but when the idea of a Thena solo film came up, Jolie said that doesn’t interest her. However she also mentioned that she would be more than happy to bring Thena to life again in future Marvel movies. Here is what she had to say:

“I loved being part of the family, so I have no desire to separate from the family. But I would be happy to play her again and explore even more deeply the struggles that she has. I think it’s fun thinking of where they’ve been over the years. We’ve got thousands of years worth of material. We can take her anywhere. I think that’s fun and I like the idea that we can pop up somewhere, maybe in other Marvel movies.”

Jolie has said in other interviews that the appeal of doing Eternals was the idea of this very diverse family that thrives off of each other’s strengths. She respects their loyalty and that’s something that made the movie stand out to her compared to other comic book adaptations. She must have her reasons to fall back a bit in the film because I was left perplexed after I saw the film that she would take on a role that wasn’t more at the forefront. Angelina Jolie doesn’t strike me as the seventh lead on the call sheet kind of actress but, given her comments, it appears she’s more than happy to lend a bit of her stature to help the overall ensemble shine.

Thena is certainly an interesting character. There are issues with her mental struggles that would be intriguing to explore and she’s a fierce warrior, which allows Jolie to command the screen during some of the film’s action scenes. Jolie is one of the few actresses that can outact her co-stars with a single look and she proves in Eternals that she still has the stare down. With so many characters it was hard to really get to know Thena but I’m sure we will be seeing her again in another Marvel project down the line.
