Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars movie Rogue Squadron has been delayed

We’re going to have to wait a bit longer to see Star Wars hit the big screen again. It has been announced that Rogue Squadron, set to be directed by Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins, has been delayed.

Jenkins and writer Matthew Robinson have been in development on Rogue Squadron for more than a year. The goal was to have production start in 2022 with pre-production planned for the end of the year. According to “The Hollywood Reporter“, the filmmaking team came to realize that Jenkins’ schedule and other commitments would not allow that timeline to happen so the 2022 production start had to be nixed. The film has been taken off of the production schedule and hope is that once Jenkins fulfills her other commitments, she’ll be able to return to the project.

If plans had gone as previously reported, Rogue Squadron would’ve been the first theatrical Star Wars release since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Rogue Squadron was originally dated for December 22, 2023, and even though that release date hasn’t been officially changed by the studio, the production delay more than likely makes that release date completely unfeasible at this point.

What’s unclear are the exact previous commitments that Jenkins has going on that led to the delay. She is in development on Wonder Woman 3 for Warner Bros. and the Cleopatra film for Paramount Pictures with Gal Gadot. According to “The Hollywood Reporter“, Wonder Woman 3 was originally planned to follow Rogue Squadron but it appears these plans have shifted.

Rogue Squadron and Patty Jenkins’ involvement with the film was first announced during Disney’s investor day in December 2020. It’s not clear if Lucasfilm has another Star Wars film ready to go before Squadron although they are redevelopment on several films, including one from Marvel boss Kevin Feige and from Taika Waititi.
