Vortex Media will be releasing the spiritual thriller Don’t Say Its Name in Canada on November 16th, at which time the movie will be available on the Apple TV app and everywhere you rent or buy movies (digital and on demand). In anticipation of the release date, we’ve gotten our hands on the trailer for the film and you can check it out in the embed above! Don’t Say Its Name digs into the legend of the Wendigo, referred to here by one of its other names, “Wheetago”. According to Algonquian myth, the Wendigo / Wheetago is an evil spirit that possesses people and turns them into cannibals.
Fittingly, this film about the Wheetago focuses on indigenous Canadian characters, and director Rueben Martell himself is Cree.
The story he crafted with co-writer Gerald Wexler has the following synopsis:
After environmental activist Kharis Redwater is called back to the living world by her mother Mary Lynne after a questionable “accident” that cost Kharis her life, an ancient spirit is reborn outside of a small northern town out of revenge for the loss of her daughter’s life. Kharis returns as a Wheetago, a ferocious creature that only gets hungrier the more it eats. Can an ex-military Park Ranger, Stacey Cole, and Police Officer, Betty Stonechild, call back their traditional teachings to stop Kharis before she continues to feed on all who get in her way?
Don’t Say Its Name stars Sera-Lys McArthur as Stacey Cole, Madison Walsh as Betty Stonechild, Julian Black Antelope as Carson Stonefeather, Samuel Marty as Ben Stonechild, Sheena Kaine as Kharis Redwater, and Carla Fox as Mary Lynne.
A couple images from Don’t Say Its Name can be seen below, along with the film’s poster. Judging by the trailer, this movie looks really good to me, so I will be checking it out at the first opportunity.
