Kevin Smith: “It’s time” for him to make a Satanic cult movie

Kevin Smith is a busy person. In addition to doing podcasts, he’s currently in post-production on Clerks III, waiting for the next five episodes of his show Masters of the Universe: Revelation to be released through the Netflix streaming service on November 23rd, promoting his coffee table book Kevin Smith’s Secret Stash (buy it HERE), and hosting screenings of Clerk, the documentary director Malcolm Ingram made about him. (That’s getting a November 23rd digital release.) He’s also working on future projects in the midst of all this – including writing the screenplay for a Satanic cult movie he wants to make.

We first heard about this Satanic cult / devil cult idea back in June, before Clerks III started filming and the first batch of Masters of the Universe: Revelation episodes were released. Months later, Smith brought it up again in an interview with The Daily Beast, after discussing the fact that he had ideas for a Dogma sequel that he shelved because not only did he receive death threats for that movie, there was also an incident where a brick was thrown through a window in his home, right next to his infant daughter’s room.

I thought that perhaps Dogma II can wait until my kid’s grown up. But good news, Marlow: My kid is now 22 and just moved into her own house, so now I don’t have to worry about the kid anymore, and maybe it’s time to get back to the good ol’ religious moviemaking. I’ve got two under my belt in Dogma and Red State, so I’m thinking it’s time to make one more — and it’s got to be about Satanism. As an old-timey Catholic who grew up in the era of The Exorcist and The Omen and Race with the Devil, there’s always been some Satanic cult movie brewing in me.”

I’m a member of Smith’s fan club at ThatKevinSmithClub.com, and when he brings up this cult movie from time to time in his videos it does seem like he’s excited about it. Hopefully it will happen soon – but he’s also working on other projects and still intends to make Moose Jaws and a sequel to Mallrats, so we’ll have to wait and see which of these movies goes into production first.

We’re also waiting to hear when his horror anthology Killroy Was Here is finally going to be released.
