Dexter: Michael C. Hall admits he didn’t like the series finale

Despite the fact that Dexter was warmly received by critics and fans alike, most can agree that the series finale was downright polarizing. Some fans felt the final episode just about ruined the entire show and that makes many of them hopeful for what the upcoming revival series has in store for them. As it turns out, Michael C. Hall, who played the titular character, also didn’t like Dexter’s final episode as well.

While discussing the upcoming revival series with Entertainment Tonight, Michael C. Hall admits to sharing the same sentiment with the fans and critics about the controversial final episode of the hit Showtime series. Hall said, “I would get why it was pretty unsatisfying” but he did also speak on some positives about how it ended and how it sets up the upcoming new series:

“I totally get people’s dissatisfaction with the way the show ended ’cause it didn’t really end. It just left us in this pretty unresolved funny certain place and while I thought that it made sense for the character to find himself in that position and to put himself in this self-imposed exile after all the chaos after the show, I would get why it was pretty unsatisfying… [and] infuriating for fans, they spent all this time and were longing for something that answered some questions or tied some things up or did something that the finale didn’t manage to do. But if nothing else, it did set the stage for what we’ve been up to for the last several months in this new show, so maybe that’s the silver lining. Just as I knew that the show didn’t sit that well in its finale with viewers, it didn’t sit that well with me and I felt like I owed it to myself to explore it further if it came up. That it made sense and it did and owed it to the character and owed it to the fans for sure.”

The 10-episode Dexter revival is set 10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura. The character is now living under an assumed name in Upstate New York — far from his original home in Miami. The Dexter revival is technically considered a closed-ended revival, though it does continue the original series which ended with the very controversial series finale in 2013 that is still very polarizing for fans. The revival’s new series regulars include Clancy Brown as the primary villain, Julia Jones as the town’s chief of police, Alano Miller as a sergeant/high school wrestling coach, Johnny Sequoyah as the chief’s daughter, and Jack Alcott as Randall, someone with whom Dexter has a meaningful encounter.

As previously reported, John Lithgow will be returning as The Trinity Killer.  Lithgow previously offered up some insight about his return as news of Jennifer Carpenter, who played Dexter’s sister on the original series, also brought more veterans back to the show. Lithgow further explained that he learned of the Dexter revival five months ago when showrunner Clyde Phillips notified him by saying, “‘Can you come just to spend one day in The Berkshires?’” ‘I said, ‘Of course I can,’ and that’s exactly what it was.” Lithgow also said, “there are all sorts of wonderful surprises and callbacks from the first few seasons.”

As to how Lithgow is coming back as The Trinity Killer? Well, as you recall, the actor appeared throughout Season 4 as Arthur Mitchell, a seemingly normal family man, who turned out to be The Trinity Killer. The character was a huge fan-favorite and the role earned Lithgow his fifth Emmy in 2010 but the character was murdered by Dexter in the Season 4 finale. Lithgow clarified his return for the revival by saying, “As all Dexter fans know, we saw the end of the Trinity Killer, so that by definition means it’s a flashback. It was just wonderful to rejoin that gang—including Michael and Jennifer Carpenter and Clyde Phillips.”  “The Hollywood Reporter“, was the first to report that Jennifer Carpenter was also returning for the Dexter revival. Carpenter portrayed Deb Morgan, Dexter Morgan’s sister, in the original series. The actress played the role for eight seasons but was famously killed off in the 2013 series finale. History reportedly won’t be re-written here. Carpenter is expected to appear in flashback scenes as well.
