Writer/director David Weiner’s 2019 documentary In Search of Darkness was a really fun, 4 hour look back at the awesome horror movies of the 1980s. I have yet to watch last year’s follow-up In Search of Darkness: Part II, another 4 hour documentary that focuses more on under-the-radar films, but I’ll check it out one of these days and I’m sure it will be another good time. Now Weiner is working on another chapter in the series, In Search of Darkness: Part III – and through midnight on Halloween, fans of the In Search of Darkness documentaries will be able to fund the making of the third one by pre-ordering a copy at 80sHorrorDoc.com.
In addition to standalone copies of In Search of Darkness: Part III, they’re also offering trilogy bundles and the chance to be listed as a producer on the film. With nine days to go, they’ve already raised almost $300,000, so things are looking good.
Here’s the film’s description:
Join us on one final journey into ‘80s Horror. This four-hour-plus finale to the most celebrated horror documentary series in history will shine a spotlight on the straight-to-video horror classics that defined the era. In Search of Darkness: Part III will finish the trilogy as we started it: with an incredible cast of horror legends providing critical takes, insider tales, and unheard anecdotes.
In this epic final chapter, our focus turns to the straight-to-video horror classics that populated the bottom shelves at the video rental store. Imaginative, gory, experimental – but always entertaining – these hidden gems are ripe for rediscovery, and we can’t wait to shine a spotlight on these lesser-known and underrated titles. We’ll also be giving some overdue attention to select theatrical releases yet to be covered by the series.
Interviewees will include Robert Englund, Linnea Quigley, Tom Savini, Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson, Lloyd Kaufman, Kane Hodder, Bill Moseley, Geretta Geretta, Doug Bradley, John Carpenter, Tom Atkins, Adrienne Barbeau, Dee Wallace, Julie Brown, William Sandell, Mark Mangini, and Gene Simmons.
Weiner had this to say about the project:
When we completed In Search of Darkness: Part II, I was afraid that we might have hammered the final nail into the ‘80s horror coffin. But the overwhelming encouragement and enthusiasm from fans for even more exploration and discussion of ‘80s horror goodness fills me with joy. There is an almost never-ending supply of dark and quirky films to mine from the dusty bottom shelves of our collective basement video stores. And this final, extended celebration of the era in In Search of Darkness: Part III may be the most nostalgic and heartfelt yet.”
Executive producer Robin Block of CREATORVC added:
Our mission is to provide backers with a truly immersive and interactive ’80s Horror experience that will last throughout the production lifecycle. Join us as we deep dive into the straight to video era and uncover the hidden treasure from the depths of the VHS archive. We offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate this unique era of horror cinema and for hardcore fans to co-curate the defining documentary opus.”
