Every network wants at least one potential hit to brag about during the fall season and while network ratings aren’t setting the world on fire, there are some bright spots. For NBC it’s their disaster drama series, La Brea, as it had a decent linear debut but where it’s truly winning is on Peacock with younger viewers.
The series premiere of La Brea, which aired on September 28, 2021, has more than doubled in total viewers since that air date from 6.4 million viewers, per Nielsen overnights, to 15.6 million viewers, per “Deadline.” The 15.6 million figure includes live and delayed linear viewing as well as digital viewers on the Peacock streaming service.
The series is now the best launch of any new NBC show on the Peacock platform but, as is the case with most streaming services, the standalone digital numbers were not released. That being said, it’s clear that NBCUniversal is not only pleased with the show’s total performance (it’s the No. 3 new show of the season in total Live+3 viewers after NCIS: Hawaii and FBI International) but also with its performance with younger viewers which has driven more traffic to their streaming service. The premiere more than tripled in the coveted 18-49 demo from a 0.77 rating to a 2.72. That’s a growth of more than 250% and a lot of that came from viewers taking to Peacock to watch the show. Considering the huge marketing push NBC gave the series, beginning with promos during the Summer Olympics, NBC has to be thrilled their investment is paying off so far.
La Brea, which was originally pitched as Lost-meets-Land of the Lost, is centered around a mother and son separated from father and daughter after a massive sinkhole mysteriously opens up in Los Angeles. The series stars Natalie Zea, Jack Martin, Eoin Macken, and Chike Okonkwo.
