AppleTV+ orders Shrinking comedy series from the team behind Ted Lasso

Ted Lasson, Jason Segel, Shrinking, Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein

AppleTV+ has given a 10-episode order to the Shrinking comedy series starring Jason Segel. Segel also serves as writer and executive producer alongside Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein of Ted Lasso fame.

According to Deadline, Apple’s Shrinking comedy series follows a grieving therapist (Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives…including his own. Segel will write the series with Lawrence and Goldstein. Shrinking is produced by Ted Lasso studio Warner Bros. Television and Lawrence’s studio-based Doozer Productions.

Shrinking marks the second Apple Original starring Segel, who is set to star in Apple Original Films’ The Sky is Everywhere. Based on the YA novel of the same name by Jandy Nelson, the book’s official Amazon description reads as follows:

Adrift after her sister Bailey’s sudden death, Lennie finds herself torn between quiet, seductive Toby—Bailey’s boyfriend who shares her grief—and Joe, the new boy in town who bursts with life and musical genius. Each offers Lennie something she desperately needs… though she knows if the two of them collide her whole world will explode.

Join Lennie on this heartbreaking and hilarious journey of profound sorrow and mad love, as she makes colossal mistakes and colossal discoveries, as she traipses through band rooms and forest bedrooms and ultimately right into your heart.

As much a celebration of love as a poignant portrait of loss, Lennie’s struggle to sort her melody out of the noise around her is always honest, often uproarious, and absolutely unforgettable.

Segel recently created, executive produced and starred in Dispatches From Elsewhere, which should have gotten a second season on AMC. Bold, experimental, and peculiar in several ways, Dispatches From Elsewhere might be one of my favorite shows ever. It revolves around four ordinary people who stumble across a puzzle hiding just beyond the veil of everyday life, and their eyes are opened to a world of possibility and magic. If you check it out, be sure to watch it until the end. There’s a surprise waiting for you there that will change how you view the entire show, for better or worse.

Apple’s Shrinking TV series could be another major hit for the streaming platform. It’s got a great team behind it, and both Lawrence and Goldstein are currently on fire after the success of Ted Lasso. Can they strike gold again with Shrinking? I can’t wait to find out.
