We’ve got an Alien TV series in our future, and although Ridley Scott is an executive producer on the project, he has some choice words about the whole thing. Fargo‘s Noah Hawley will serve as the creator of the series which will be set on Earth in the not too distant future. “By blending both the timeless horror of the first ‘Alien’ film with the non-stop action of the second, it’s going to be a scary thrill ride that will blow people back in their seats,” reads the official description.
While speaking with The Independent, Ridley Scott was asked about the upcoming Alien TV series and said “It’ll never be as good as the first one. That’s what I’ll say.” As a huge fan of the original Alien film, I’ll likely agree with Ridley Scott at the end of the day, but Noah Hawley has more than proven himself when it comes to taking inspiration from a classic movie and giving it a new twist. While the Alien TV series may not be as “good” as the first film, it can be a different beast, which is what I’m really looking forward to. Although Ridley Scott does have experience with television, most recently with HBO Max’s Raising Wolves, he is strictly a big-screen director. “The film is gonna be more powerful in cinema,” Scott said. “It should never go away. It should not be allowed to go away.“
Ridley Scott brought back the Alien franchise with 2012’s Prometheus, but he “never showed an alien in it.” Although the film did make over $400 million worldwide, Scott said that the studio told him it didn’t do well, so he “put the aliens back in there” for Alien: Covenant, which wound up performing less well with $240 million. After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, they announced that they would “continue to create new stories” in the Alien franchise. It was later reported that Ridley Scott would be returning to direct another Alien prequel, but it may not have much of a connection to Prometheus or Alien: Covenant. The Alien TV series could debut on FX on Hulu in 2023.
