Halloween Kills Interview: John Carpenter

Last Updated on October 15, 2021

Much of my love for all things October and pretty much everything involving Halloween stems from the work of John Carpenter. When I was much too young, I found myself watching the original 1978 classic and appropriately titled Halloween, featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence. Not only did this convince me that I wanted to watch every slasher film ever made, but it also made me aware of the name of the man behind it – the first director that truly made an impression on this young film fan. My adoration for Carpenter only continued with films like The Fog, The Thing, They Live, Starman, Prince of Darkness, and so many more that it’s too much to mention. And thankfully, with the release of David Gordon Green’s original continuation of Carpenter’s classic and the soon-to-be-released Halloween Kills (read my review), the man who helped bring Michael Myers to life is back, creating yet another brilliant score and taking on an executive producer role. And we had the incredible chance to speak with him.

Sitting down with John Carpenter was something of a big deal on a personal level. As a long-time fan, it was beyond exciting sitting down to chat Halloween Kills and more. While we began discussing some of the returning characters and even a couple of actors from the classic 1978 feature film, the conversation ended up taking a really fun turn. If you aren’t aware, there was a time when John Carpenter and the great Debra Hill wanted to do something different with the franchise by exploring other stories that took place on the holiday. With that came Halloween III: Season of the Witch. It didn’t set the world of horror on fire. I asked the director if exploring the idea of a holiday anthology series for Halloween is something that could perhaps happen after the release of next year’s Halloween Ends. His answer may not surprise you, but it was a blast chatting about a movie that has certainly grown on me and others throughout the years. Thankfully, we still have the impressive new sequel, Halloween Kills to add to our holiday viewing. If you are a fan of this franchise, it’s a no-brainer. Check out the latest from David Gordon Green this Friday at a theater near you – and also available on Peacock.
