Tiger King 2: teaser and release date revealed

UPDATE: Well that didn’t take long did it? Fresh off of their announcement that Tiger King 2 was on the way, Netflix dropped a tiny sneak peak at the new season as part of their Tudum event, plus the officially announced a November 17th release date! Will Tiger King 2 be as much of a global phenomenon as the original? Only time will tell.

There’s nothing that’ll make you feel the burn of the COVID-19 pandemic like the announcement of a sequel to Tiger King. Okay, so maybe there are plenty of other, more life-threatening things, but you know what I mean, right? Tiger King came along during a time when much of the world’s population were urged to shelter in place and avoid contact with the outside world. Fast-forward to today when Netflix has announced Tiger King 2, a sequel documentary to its 2020 smash hit.

Tiger King 2 promises “more madness and mayhem,” according to the press release. Directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin are returning for the second installment, as well as executive producers Chris Smith and Fisher Stevens. Good and Chaiklin will also serve as executive producers.

Although it remains unclear of when in the timeline of events Tiger King 2 take place, a teaser for Netflix’s upcoming slate of true-crime documentaries shows Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel behind bars. As a point of note, Schreibvogel is currently serving a 17-year prison sentence.

Tiger King has received its share of criticism for its exploitative, tabloid-journalism treatment of its sensitive subject matter, including several crimes against both human beings and endangered animals. The docuseries follows Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel, a zookeeper and big cat breeder currently serving jail time after being convicted in a murder-for-hire plot against his professional and personal rival Carole Baskin, who runs a non-profit animal sanctuary and is trying to make private ownership of big cats illegal in the U.S.

In addition to Tiger King 2, Netflix announced several true-crime documentaries slated for the streamer, including The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman, The Tinder Swindler, Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King, and Bad Vegan.
