Director Aneil Karia’s thriller Surge premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and received a theatrical release in the UK back in May, and now Filmrise is set to bring it to theatres and cable VOD in the US next week, on September 24th. In anticipation of the film’s US release, we’ve gotten our hands on its trailer, which you can see in the embed above. Surge stars Ben Whishaw, who is probably best known to the general audience – and certainly to me – as the modern Q in the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. He returns as Q in the upcoming Bond movie No Time to Die.
In this film, Whishaw plays
Joseph, who is trapped in a soulless job, living a life devoid of emotion and meaning. After an impulsive act of rebellion, Joseph unleashes a wilder version of himself. He is propelled on a reckless journey through London, ultimately experiencing what it feels like to be alive.
Karia previously directed multiple shorts and episodes of the shows Lovesick, Pure, and Top Boy. Surge marks his feature debut. He also wrote the screenplay with Rita Kalnejais (Babyteeth) and Rupert Jones (Kaleidoscope).
Whishaw is joined in the cast by Ellie Haddington (Enola Holmes), Jasmine Jobson (Lie Low), and Ian Gelder (Game of Thrones). In addition to the Bond films, Whishsaw has earned over 55 other screen credits, including roles in The Trench, Layer Cake, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Cloud Atlas, Mary Poppins Returns, and episodes of Fargo. He also provided the voice of Paddington in the two recent movies.
If you’re in the US, check out the trailer and see if Surge looks like a movie you’d want to watch later this month. If you’re the UK and have already seen the movie, let us know what you thought of it by leaving a comment below.
