The Bodyguard reboot hires writer Matthew López to pen the script

Who’s ready to belt out a passionate rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” because Warner Bros. has found its writer for The Bodyguard reboot. Tasked with penning the romantic drama is Tony-nominated The Inheritance playwright Matthew López. Said to be inspired by the original film, the story focuses on a former Secret Service agent who is tasked with protecting the life of an R&B singer. The film, starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, marked the R&B icon’s feature film debut.

In addition to pleasing audiences, The Bodyguard also gave the film industry its biggest album release ever. The original soundtrack for The Bodyguard sold 45 million copies worldwide, in addition to winning a Grammy Award for Album of the Year and being certified 18x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. As if that’s not impressive enough, two songs, “Run to You” and “I Have Nothing,” were each nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars. Unfortunately, both tracks lost to “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin. Of course, no music discussion revolving around The Bodyguard would be complete without highlighting “I Will Always Love You.” The uber-popular anthem went platinum in the United States 8x selling 8 million copies. The soundtrack stands as the 15-the-best-selling album in the U.S.

It’s only a matter of time before casting begins for this reimagined version of the original story, and you can bet that all will be eager to see who lands the lead roles.
