The Sinister Six: Andrew Garfield addresses scrapped Spider-Man spinoff

Once upon a time, Sony had a grand vision for a Spider-Man Cinematic Universe to rival that of Marvel Studios, but alas, it was not to be. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was intended to launch a whole series of spinoff movies that would expand the franchise, but when the film fell below expectations, Sony scrapped the spinoffs and the stage was set for the character to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of those Spider-Man spinoffs would have revolved around The Sinister Six.

The Sinister Six was a supervillain team originally consisting of Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter. The Cabin in the Woods‘ Drew Goddard signed on to write and direct the Sinister Six movie, but the project obviously didn’t come to fruition. While speaking with Collider, Andrew Garfield was asked if he had ever talked with Goddard about the scrapped spinoff.

I don’t know how close it got, but I definitely had a few meetings, and it was really exciting. I’ve got to say, because I love Drew so much, and I love Cabin in the Woods, and the other stuff that he’s made. We just got on like a house on fire. I loved his vision, he’s so unique and odd and off-kilter and unconventional in his creative choices. So that was definitely a fun couple of months, but life.

Although The Sinister Six movie under Drew Goddard’s direction likely won’t happen, Andrew Garfield said that “It would have been cool. Maybe one day he’ll get to do it, but it would’ve been cool.” We may get to see the Sinister Six in the MCU however as the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home will feature several members of the team, including Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus. There have also been rumblings that Andrew Garfield, as well as Tobey Maguire, will be reprising their Spider-Man roles as well, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
