Muti: Morgan Freeman, Cole Hauser serial killer thriller acquired by Redbox

Redbox Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights to director George Gallo’s action thriller Muti, starring Morgan Freeman and Cole Hauser. Muti recently wrapped filming in Mississippi and the production is now heading over to Italy to do some filming there.

Gallo’s previous credits include writing Midnight Run, Bad Boys (1995), and Trapped in Paradise, which he also directed. This time around he’s working from a screenplay written by Bob Bowersox, Jennifer Lemmon, Francesco Cinquemani, Giorgia Iannone, Luca Giliberto, and Ferdinando Dell’Omo, based on a story Cinquemani crafted with Joe Lemmon.

Muti centers on

Detective Boyd (Hauser), who, unable to process the death of his daughter, embarks on the hunt for a serial killer who murders according to a brutal tribal ritual: Muti. The only person who can help Boyd is Professor Mackles (Freeman), an anthropologist who hides an unspeakable secret. The line between sanity and madness thins as Boyd goes deeper into the killer’s world.

Freeman and Hauser are joined in the cast by Peter Stormare and Vernon Davis.

Joe Lemmon of Black Diamond Films is producing the film alongside Andrea Iervolino, Monika Bacardi and Danielle Maloni of Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment SPA, and Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler of Wonderfilm Media. Richard Salvatore, David E. Ornston, Nate Adams, and Luca Matrundola of March on Productions serve as executive producers.

Redbox’s Galen Smith said,

After reading the script to Muti we knew this was a special film that will have audiences at the edge of their seats. The casting is phenomenal, and George’s past work on Bad Boys and other projects speaks for itself. We can’t wait to premiere this next year.”

Watching Morgan Freeman and Cole Hauser track a serial killer through Mississippi and Italy sounds like a good time to me. Here’s the first image from Muti:
