Jake Gyllenhaal was such a fan of Gustav Möller’s 2018 Danish thriller The Guilty, he not only moderated Q&A sessions during the film’s run, he also picked up the remake rights – and found a couple great collaborators to help him make a new take on the concept. Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, the remake of The Guilty is set to reach select theatres on September 24th. It will then be available to watch through the Netflix streaming service as of October 1st. Check out the teaser trailer in the embed above!

This is very much a “teaser”, as it doesn’t actually show anything from the movie, but it does offer a preview of some tense dialogue.

The Guilty takes place

over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center. Call operator Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger — but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out.

Gyllenhaal is joined in the cast by Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Paul Dano, Peter Sarsgaard, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Bill Burr.

The Guilty will be screening at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its theatrical / Netflix release. TIFF runs from September 10th through September 18th this year. Word is that Netflix is making sure The Guilty gets a theatrical run so it can be an Oscar contender.

I haven’t seen the original version of this story, but it sounds interesting. I really enjoyed the 2013 Brad Anderson / Halle Berry movie The Call, which was also about a 911 operator desperately trying to save a caller. I assume The Guilty goes in directions that it make it different enough from The Call to stand on its own.
