Dead for a Dollar: Rachel Brosnahan joins Walter Hill’s new western

Dead for a Dollar, Rachel Brosnahan, Walter Hill western

According to Deadline, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan is set to join the cast of Dead for a Dollar, Walter Hill’s upcoming western that already stars Christoph Waltz and Willem Dafoe.

Set to be written and directed by Walter Hill, Dead for a Dollar will be set in New Mexico Territory, Chihuahua in 1897. Christoph Waltz will play Max Borlund, a famed bounty hunter who is hired to find Rachel Price (Brosnahan), the politically progressive wife of Santa Fe businessman Nathan price. Told that she’s been kidnapped by an African American army deserter and being held for ransom in Mexico, Max goes south of the border in search of her, only to run across his sworn enemy, Joe Cribbens (Willem Dafoe), a professional gambler who Max had tracked down and sent to prison years before.

When Borlund finds Rachel and Elijah hiding deep in the wilds of the Mexican desert, he discovers that Rachel has willingly fled from an abusive husband, and the runaway soldier is, in fact, her romantic partner. Max is now faced with a dilemma: does he return the wife back across the border to the man who hired him, or does he aid Rachel’s bid for freedom and fight off ruthless hired guns and his longtime criminal rival. Count me in.

As great as it is to see Walter Hill returning to the western genre with Dead for a Dollar, it’s just exciting to know that he’s back in the saddle at all! Hill’s last film was The Assignment in 2016, an action thriller starring Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver. As for Rachel Brosnahan, she was most recently seen in The Courier alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and I’m Your Woman for Amazon Studios. She’s also in the midst of filming the fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which had been delayed due to the pandemic.
