Last weekend, a trailer for Syfy's upcoming Day of the Dead TV series was released to promote the show as "an ode to George A. Romero", the director of the 1985 zombie classic (watch it HERE) that the series is lifting its title from… Even though there really doesn't seem to be much that's Romero-esque about this. Now a batch of images from the first episode have arrived online to show off some of this Day of the Dead's zombies and characters – and reveal something that sets it even further apart from Romero.
Syfy has ordered 10 episodes of Day of the Dead, which was written by showrunners Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas and tells the story of
six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion. This ode to Romero’s famous flesh-eaters reminds us that sometimes all it takes to bring people together is a horde of hungry zombies trying to rip them apart.
4 of the episodes were directed by Steven Kostanski (Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman).
Here's some character information:
Keenan Tracey is playing Cam McDermott, "a high school senior and son of a local police detective who spends his free time working odd jobs to get out of his small Pennsylvania hometown."
Daniel Doheny's character is Luke Bowman, "the son of town mayor, Paula Bowman."
Natalie Malaika takes on the role of Lauren Howell, "a sarcastic assistant mortician at the local mortuary."
Newcomer Morgan Holmstrom is Sarah Blackwood, "former Special Forces now working on a fracking crew outside of town. She discovers a mysterious body which plunges her into the middle of a zombie invasion."
Kristy Dinsmore is playing Amy, "a life coach and daughter of the town doctor. When the dead start to rise, she begins a transformation as she fights for survival."
Aside from the presence of zombies and a character named Sarah, this show doesn't seem to have anything to do with Romero's Day of the Dead. The synopsis is more Night of the Living Dead, but one of the images below shows zombies rising from the ground in a cemetery, which is The Return of the Living Dead style, not Romero.
This could be a fun bit of zombie entertainment, I just don't like that they're cashing in on the Romero name.
Day of the Dead will begin airing on Syfy sometime in October.
