Already given a theatrical release in directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo's home country of France, the supernatural horror film The Deep House was recently acquired by Blumhouse for a U.S. release through the Epix channel. While we wait to hear exactly when this Epix release is going to happen, we have gotten our hands on a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.
The Deep House centers on
a couple of YouTubers who go diving in a remote French lake and discover a house submerged in deep waters. Their adventure turns into a nightmare when they understand the house harbors atrocious crimes and find themselves trapped with hardly any oxygen left. Their presence has awakened a dark spirit haunting the house.
James Jagger and Camille Rowe star.
Maury and Bustillo came up with the idea for The Deep House because they have a shared love of "the aquatic universe and haunted house films", but combining the two proved to make the shoot quite complicated. The titular house was built on large grids and lowered into a 9 meter deep water tank that was 20 meters wide. While the cast and crew were filming in the sunken set, the directors had to stay on the surface, watching the action on monitors.
Maury said,
Every sequence under water takes three times longer to shoot than a sequence above it — even a shot reverse shot takes a long time to set up."
The directors credited Jacques Ballard, "a master of underwater filming", with helping them pull it off.
Hopefully it won't be long before genre fans in the U.S. will have the chance to see how this process turned out. Maury and Bustillo's breakthrough feature Inside was so good, it has ensured that I will see anything they make.
The Deep House was a collaboration between Radar Films, Logical Pictures, Apollo Films Distribution, and Forecast Pictures, with the support of Umedia. Clement Miserez and Matthieu Warter produced the film.
