Another couple of Smiths have made news today, according to Production Weekly. Filmmaker and photographer Carter Smith, who has helmed videos for some of the music industry’s biggest names, is set to direct an adaptation of Scott Smith’s novel THE RUINS, which was released last July.

Following up his best-selling first novel, A SIMPLE PLAN (of which the film adaptation received an Oscar nomination for best screenplay), THE RUINS centres on four American friends on vacation in Cancún, Mexico, who meet a German tourist, Mathias, who persuades them to join him in his hunt for his younger brother, Henrich, last seen headed off with a new girlfriend toward some ruins. The four soon regret their impulsive decision after they find themselves lost in the jungle and freaked out by signs that they’re headed for danger.

Production is tentatively slated for early May in Queensland, Australia.
