Tomaselli remakes Alice Sweet Alice

Last Updated on July 27, 2021

Friend to AITH Dante Tomaselli has got himself involved with a pretty nifty project: a remake of 1976’s unheralded classic ALICE, SWEET ALICE. Before you start throwing tomatoes at your monitor, know this: he was hand-chosen by the original director himself, Alfred Sole (who is also, as luck would have it, his cousin).

ALICE, SWEET ALICE is the story of a pair of sisters who live with their mother. When one of the siblings is killed by a masked slasher, the other becomes the prime suspect. It was one of the earlier “masked killer” flicks, and the mask in question is famous for being truly unnerving (as is that chilling poster).

I doubt this is going to be in the vein of last year’s heap-of-horseshit WHEN A STRANGER CALLS or the awful-sounding PROM NIGHT remake (which is already on the record as having a PG-13 rating) because fortunately Tomaselli seems to have the same bile towards today’s lame remakes that we all do:

These new remakes look way too light and modern with the cotton candy casting…CGI silliness. They look like fucking television commercials! Soon all of our favorites will be zapped out, every last one. So Alfred and I thought with Alice, Sweet Alice, we just want to beat everybody to the punch.”

Sole (who is currently a successful production designer) said: “I would be very proud and happy to see Dante direct the movie. I think he is very talented and I’m so proud of him. To think my movie made him want to become a film director… that’s quite an accomplishment, I would say.”

Tomaselli adds: Alice, Sweet Alice is a film that is really about evil passed on from generation to generation, so he thinks it makes sense for me to remake it, a kind of passing on of the torch…or the knife.”

I’m one of hordes who rush to judgement against a remake of a beloved horror classic (and usually we’re right to), but this one I’ll be rooting for. After all, if Tomaselli doesn’t do right by the film he’ll probably be banished from any future family outings. Hopefully some casting and further details will be headed our way soon, so keep checking in.
