Campbell’s Birds?

Last Updated on July 27, 2021

It’s no surprise that Universal has been wanting to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS for sometime now. With rumors of Naomi Watts stepping into the role played by Tippi Hedren, it was the bigger question of who’s vision is going to be immortalized on screen?

Well it happens that Universal is in talks with Martin Campbell, the man who brought us CASINO ROYALE, GOLDEN EYE and BEYOND BORDERS, to step behind the camera, as Hitchcock did so many years ago.

Naomi Watts will star and Martin Campbell is in negotiations to direct Universal’s new version of “The Birds.”

U is planning a reimagining of Daphne du Maurier’s short story, which inspired the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce through their Platinum Dunes shingle, while Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing for Mandalay Pictures.

The consensus is that Platinum Dunes and Mandalay want to stick closer to du Maurier’s story then to the film version that came out in 1963. Honestly, I have no problems with Martin Campbell directing the film. I’ve liked his work thus far, so I can only assume he’ll continue to keep my interest. But I mean out of all the Hitchcock films, why THE BIRDS? What are we looking at VERTIGO next?
