There hasn’t been too much going on for THE LAST EXORCISM lately. Other than last week’s viral stunt, I say the film’s been pretty silent as of late. Maybe everyone (Inlcuding Roth) has been too busy biting their fingernails in sweet anticipation? I would if I had money on this thing. Public reception has not been as great as expected and with only a couple more days until it’s wide release there might still be time to sway the people into giving the flick a chance.
At first EXORCISM seemed like a nice hour and a half event involving head explosions, vomit projectiles, back breaking stunts and the works. This was back when it was known as COTTON by the way. It seems gore is not the factor here. Dread Central had the pleasure of conducting an interview with Roth over his role as producer. While he did speak a lot about casting, influence and going back to his indie roots, Roth also delved a little deeper into what attracted him to the project in the first place. I’ll give you a hint: it wasn’t the gore.
Read what he has to say about skipping out on all the mushy gushy stuff and going straight for prize winner: “I think our ultimate goal was that we just wanted to make a truly scary movie and the story really didn’t call for a lot of gore or violence,” Roth explained. “The premise of a girl who may or may not be possessed was scary enough, especially when you factor in threats from her family. So, when Lionsgate came in and bought the film, they told us that if the MPAA asked us to cut the most important scenes in order to get a PG-13 rating, then we’d just work with The Last Exorcism having an R rating. That was incredible because they believed so much in the film, they didn’t want a castrated version of it released in theaters.”
You can check out the rest of the interview by clicking here . So if you were going to your local cinema venue this weekend with hopes of seeing some serious nastiness being splattered on the screen, then you might want to put the breaks on and figure out what you want to see out of this movie first. THE LAST EXORCISM crawls into theaters this Friday. If you’re bored and aching for some serious marketing, check out this dealio right here and have yourself a laugh scream.
