Our pal Ryan Rotten over at STYD had a recent sit-down with Jason Blum, who you know produced Oren Peli’s mega-hit PARANORMAL ACTIVITY in 2009. Since then, Blum has gone on to produce a spate of genre films, including INSIDIOUS, P.A. 2, THE BAY, as well as the upcoming LORDS OF SALEM, and “The River” for ABC. However, one film that seems lost in the shuffle is AREA 51, Peli’s sophomore directorial effort. What’s the hell’s deal with that flick?
Here’s what Blum told STYD:
“Area 51 is like Paranormal Activity. The additional photography for Paranormal Activity, we went back 50 times. The great thing about doing extra shooting for inexpensive movies is that the cost is low, so we screen and shoot and screen and shoot. Oren and I were pulled away from Area 51 a lot for the second Paranormal. Once that came out, we ramped up on Area 51 again. I anticipate the movie will be mostly done in about three or four months. They can’t set a release date yet until we do all of that.”
When asked about a possible 2012 release date, Blum offered:
“Not for sure. It will depend on the competitive release schedule all the way around. It could be sooner.”
You can spin it anyway you want, but reshoots can’t be a good sign, can they? A few inserts here, a pick-up or two there, yeah, that’s fan. But major portions were reshot it could mean trouble in paradise.
