December 2014. Seems like a time rather far off in the future. Plenty of time to make a movie and have it ready to show, don’t you think? If you’re James Cameron, the answer is “probably not.”
Way back in October of 2010 it was announced that Cameron’s two sequels to his mega-blockbuster AVATAR were being prepped with December 2014 and ’15 releases planned. Considering he and his company had already commenced work on the films, it looked like he had plenty of time to whip at least part 2 into shape. But now, it seems as though AVATAR 2 is in jeopardy of not being ready in time.
Cameron’s producer Jon Landau sat down with Empire to talk TITANIC 3D, and naturally, the subject of AVATAR 2 was broached. Landau had the following to say:
“We’re not naming dates, but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make. It’s about getting it right.”
Landau goes on to point out that TITANIC was originally slated for a summer release but ultimately came out in December, while AVATAR was delayed an entire year. Neither film was hurt financially by those postponements, obviously. Besides, we know what a perfectionist Cameron is, so this development isn’t a complete surprise.
To see the entire interview with Landau, head on over to Empire.
