Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day talk Pacific Rim

Following a very well received showing at this year’s Comic-Con, it unfortunately looks like we’re not going to see a whole lot from Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM before we get closer to the sci-fi epic’s 2013 release date. Still, some of the cast have been fairly talkative about the project of late. Collider managed to chat with two of the film’s stars – Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day. You can read a couple of interesting excerpts below.

Charlie Hunnam on the plot and his character:

“The film is set in the very near future and monsters have come out of the ocean and decided to destroy our planet. You see very early on that current military is helpless to defend us against these monsters, so we have to figure out what we have to do. The answer is to create equally formidable robots that are as big as a skyscraper. That’s the basic world. I play one of the elite soldiers who pilots these robots and I’m trying and failing to overcome a huge loss in my life. I’ve kind of lost my way to fight and to live and I get reluctanctly dragged out of retirement to assist in this big push we’re making.”

Charlie Day on the way del Toro shoots action scenes:

“He’s found a different way to shoot CGI. Every set I walked into was built to a T, to the nines. I saw almost no actual green screen; I would be running from a monster and cars would be flipping over behind me—real cars—over my head like, ‘Oh that almost killed me,’ and I knew that at some point they were gonna paint a monster in there but it’s very real for me in this moment. So it was awesome and I think it’s gonna be a really great movie.”

It’s not much, but I’ll take it. It’s great (if not too surprising) to hear that del Toro retains his penchant for keeping FX as practical as humanly possible.
