EPISODE 7: When The Dead Come Knocking

THE HOOK: With Hershel’s farm overrun, Rick and company are on the move again. They come across a prison which Rick feels would be perfect…once it’s purged of walkers. But the dead aren’t the only danger lurking in the shadows.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode). I’ve so been waiting for Michonne to join Rick and his crew and though I don’t clearly recall the transition in the comics, I think it went down smoother than it did here. Michonne is tough as nails and I love her persona, but she’s awfully lacking when it comes to people skills. I think ordinarily Rick would’ve been more understanding, but dude’s at his breaking point so the pleasantries have all but evaporated. Hell, I’m not even sure he was going to help her until Carl opened up on the walkers. What I did love was how quick Rick bounced back into reality and took charge of the situation like old times. Just keep him away from phones and he’ll be fine.

Merle was having a blast interrogating Glen and it’s here we see just how much anger he’s been repressing since the incident on the roof. As much as I think he and Daryl will have to battle it out, that won’t come about until after he’s had a dance or two with Rick. That’s one fight I’m anxious as hell to see. And if you want to talk intensity, Merle tossing a walker into the room with poor Glen tied up was about as intense as a scene can get. I was hoping we wouldn’t see Maggie get raped by the Governor and we didn’t. Again, I’m sure they intentionally let us believe it was coming, but deep down I knew they wouldn’t spoil the Governors “nice guy” routine he’s got going. Yes, I’m going there again. Aside from an evil stare here and there, dude’s not coming off as menacing in the least. He’s more an empathetic dad/survivalist who will stop at nothing to protect what he’s built. I admire that, but where’s the sadistic maniac I know and love?

The bond between characters has grown to epic proportions and like it or not, we’re all emotionally involved with at least two or three of them at this point. Rick’s pep talk with Carl was touching, as was the broski talk between Daryl and Rick. Everyone shed tears over Carol’s return and the bond between Maggie and Glen grew stronger. I love these characters and even though I know what happens in the comics, I’m on the edge of my seat this entire hour. I was a little thrown by the random demented hillbilly who gets mowed down on like leftovers after the bar. It happened so fast I almost had to watch it again, but it felt more comedic than dramatic when all was said and done. If only the walkers were smart enough to flank them, it would have been an all you can eat buffet. Stupid walkers.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 3’s seventh episode reminds us that at its core this show isn’t merely an end of world via zombies, it’s a clear reminder that people are the greatest monsters of all. I love the tension this brings to the table. Suddenly these guys have to really keep their wits about them. Walkers might stop at fences and not run around to the back of the house, but people sure as hell will. This is both the bitterness and sweet flavor that makes this show appealing. You never really know what’s about to happen, who’s waiting on the other side of the door, or who’s about to get their head chopped off. I can’t believe next week is the mid-season finale. This show’s going by way too fast this season.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Andrea totally nails the old guy in the face. He never had a chance.

BLOOD AND GORE: There’s loads of walkers tonight, dead animals, gunshots, decapitations and the crazy guy gets all kinds of messed up.

MOST ANNOYING CHARACTER: Milton. Dude, she told you he was going to try to rip you a new ass and you didn’t listen. Walkers: 1 Science: 0.

COOLEST SCENE: Glen owing the shit out that walker while being tapped to a chair = WIN across the board.

FINAL VERDICT:
