Yesterday it was announced that the production company Morgan Creek was selling off the rights to their film library, opening the door to a remake of THE EXORCIST. Today, William Friedkin posted a response to the rumors on Twitter:
I mention it only in passing, but I don't believe Morgan Creek has rights to THE ORIGINAL, only the so-called sequels.

Friedkin obviously knows what he's talking about when it comes to THE EXORCIST, but this contradiction is hearsay as much as the rumors of a remake were. We won't know it's happening until it descends upon us like a demented demon threatening to tear us apart from the inside out. You can pray that the day will never come, but it might be wise to prepare yourself in case the worst should happen.
However, for the time being we can breathe easy knowing that that time is far away and may never come. Although this does mean that the rights for EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC are up for grabs.
…Sh*t.
