Terminator: Genisys sequel pulled from schedule, maybe for good

Tis indeed Judgment Day, and no one’s gonna be too surprised by this one. Paramount has pulled the untitled TERMINATOR: GENISYS sequel from its release schedule, suggesting a very grim future for the franchise.

Back in 2014, Paramount was feeling confidant about their new movie and had given the new TERMINATOR 2 a May 19, 2017 release date, followed by a June 29, 2018 release for TERMINATOR 3. Things have changed drastically since then. Yesterday, Paramount slotted the BAYWATCH movie in TERMINATOR 2’s place and didn’t give it a new home. This means they’re either going to completely retool the series – yet again – or they’re putting it to bed for now.

Per Variety, under copyright rules, North American rights to The Terminator franchise would revert back to James Cameron in 2019. Cameron has said in the past he’s not interested in re-visiting the character he created, although he is currently converting TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY into 3D, so who knows? Maybe that’ll relight the fire.

TERMINATOR: GENISYS made an OK $440 million at the worldwide box office, which isn’t that much when your budget is in the $200 million range. (It really fell short domestically, racking up only $89 mil.) More importantly, fans – for the most part – were not very smitten with the new direction the franchise had taken. We even lobbied for an end to the TERMINATOR movies back in July, although The Arrow remains a staunch defender of the flick.
