Screenwriter Max Landis, the son of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON director John Landis, had some major success with his first produced feature screenplay CHRONICLE, and while his follow-up films AMERICAN ULTRA and VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN didn't come close to replicating that success, Landis is still doing quite well for himself. In fact, studios and financiers are currently having a bidding war over a project that has been built around his spec script DEEPER.
DEEPER centers on
a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces.
Bradley Cooper is attached to play the astronaut, with WHITE GOD director Kornel Mundruczo set to take the helm. Landis will be producing the film with Phantom Four's David S. Goyer and Kevin Turen and Addictive Pictures' Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder.
Whoever comes out the victor in the war over DEEPER is expected to pay seven figures to secure the project as their own, a price that should help soothe any disappointment over the AMERICAN ULTRA / VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN box office returns. Especially since Netflix recently bought another of Landis's spec scripts for $3 million. Yeah, he's doing just fine.
