Godzilla 2 pushed back to 2019, vs. Kong given a 2020 date

Gareth Edwards' sequel to his 2014 take on GODZILLA has been sitting on a June 8, 2018 release date for a long time, staking claim to that day before GODZILLA had even reached home video. Undeterred, Paramount Pictures has since chosen June 8, 2018 as the release date for one of their TRANSFORMERS films, setting up a box office version of a PACIFIC RIM-esque battle between robots and kaiju. Of course, that's not actually going to happen, a GODZILLA movie and a TRANSFORMERS movie are not going to be released on the same day.

GODZILLA distributor Warner Bros. just shuffled their schedule, and while doing so have pushed GODZILLA 2 back nine months, giving it the new release date of March 22, 2019.

While we'll have to wait a little longer for that sequel, the good news in all this is that the GODZILLA / KONG: SKULL ISLAND crossover will not be moving out of its previously announced release year of 2020. Warner Bros. even went so far as to announce, for the first time, a specific release date for GODZILLA VS. KONG: May 29, 2020.

KONG: SKULL ISLAND is set to reach theatres on March 10, 2017, and while Kong and Godzilla will be absent in 2018, it is cool to think that we'll be getting GODZILLA VS. KONG just fourteen months after GODZILLA 2.
