A Monster Calls J.A. Bayona

Hosted by Liam Neeson, the new trailer for J.A. Bayona's A MONSTER CALLS has arrived online, and it's one that I highly recommend that you check out.

Based on the 2011 children's book by Patrick Ness (who wrote the screenplay adaptation) and inspired by an idea from the late Siobhan Dowd, A MONSTER CALLS tells the following story:

12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall), dealing with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness, a less-than-sympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), and bullying classmates, finds a most unlikely ally when a Monster appears at his bedroom window. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth.

Cast members not mentioned in the synopsis include Toby Kebbell as Conor's father and Liam Neeson, who provided the motion capture performance and the voice of the Monster. So that's why he introduces this new trailer.

I'll admit, my interest in A MONSTER CALLS has been practically non-existent to this point. It's just not the sort of movie that would usually show up on my radar, as I don't tend to see fantasy adventures based on children's books. But I gave this new trailer a chance, and was somewhat blown away by it. It started off basically how I expected, but when the trailer really gets going the film certainly appears to live up to its description of being "a visually spectacular drama", and I was drawn in. There are stunning visuals, and moments involving Conor's mother that tug at the heart strings.

I'm one of the most prone to tears movie viewers around, and this trailer got me a bit choked up.

Siobhan Dowd came up with the idea for A MONSTER CALLS after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, so the part of the story that deals with Conor's mother's illness is likely to be quite powerful.

A MONSTER CALLS has captured by attention and interest now.

The film is set to reach theatres on October 21st.
