Eight and a half years ago, it was announced that Dark Horse Entertainment and Universal Pictures were teaming up for a live action film based on the adventures of EMILY THE STRANGE, a 13-year-old goth girl who was originally created as an advertising mascot for Rob Reger's company Cosmic Debris Etc. Inc. and has gone on to become a multimedia sensation, with comics and novels being written about her and her image being featured on clothes and various other items.
Although they had Chloe Grace Moretz attached to play Emily, Universal was never able to crack the concept to their satisfaction and instead of putting the movie into production they ended up letting the rights lapse. The EMILY THE STRANGE feature rights are now being picked up by Amazon Studios, who plan to take a different approach than Universal had in mind – rather than being live action, the Amazon take on the material is to make an animated film that will "keep the authenticity and edge of the property."
Personally, I have no idea what this EMILY THE STRANGE stuff is all about, but apparently Emily is
generally opposed to violence, hatred, prejudice, and is a vegetarian. Her best friends are her four cats, and they seem to be the only beings she truly trusts. She carries around a slingshot and possibly other minor weaponry within her dress pockets. She normally wears a black dress that she describes to have abnormally large pockets. She is nocturnal and homeschools herself. She is gifted in the world of science, having created an amnesia machine, duplicated herself, and created a time machine as well she also created a machine called a transcript. She also has created a robot/golem called Raven.
Moretz couldn't play a 13-year-old in live action anymore, but maybe she could still voice the character for this animated project.
