THE CAST OF KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE

We have arrived. A new year is upon us. Yes, 2017 has stormed in and brought us brand new challenges. One thing we had a whole lot of in 2016 are clowns. From a presidential election that resembled a circus, to a number of scary clowns terrifying small suburban areas, these pale make-up wearing nightmares are back and more frightening than ever. Thus, what better way to start it all off by looking at one of my favorite flicks from when I was a kid. That’s right, KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE is filled with crazy characters, kooky sequences and a cast ready to entertain in the bizarre world following a group of aliens, complete with red noses and large red shoes, terrorizing a small town. The Stephen Chiodo directed flick is loaded with awesomely goofy effects, and yes, lots of psycho clowns ready to cause glorious mayhem.

With a new year, we wanted to try something a little different with Where in the Horror are they Now. Instead of looking at one actor and their entire career, today we are going to take a stroll down memory lane and revisit some of the stars of this cult classic. Among the actors to ward off the evil entities from beyond, you could find the great John Vernon (DIRTY HARRY, ANIMAL HOUSE, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES) as well as Royal Dano (THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, THE RIGHT STUFF, SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES) and so many more. While we’ve unfortunately lost both Mr. Dano and Mr. Vernon, there are a few cast members that you may find very familiar. So here we are, let’s take a look at some of the familiar faces who battled these demented pranksters from space.

THEN – CHRISTOPHER TITUS: First up, you may be familiar with the name Christopher Titus. The very first credit for Mr. Titus happened to be the very film in question. It was in 1988 when Titus portrayed Bob McReed in KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE. It may have been a smaller role, but it led the actor to quickly move from the horrors of cotton candy to the small screen with day player roles on Columbo and 21 Jump Street – the series of course. When it came to the genre, the actor took on a couple of intriguing flicks including CRASH DIVE (1997) and SCAR (2007)- also starring genre favorite Angela Bettis (pictured above). Much of this comedic actors success was in television. In fact, you may be familiar with his short lived sitcom Titus, which aired from 2000-2002.

NOW: While the actor only has a few IMDb credits, he seems to be working rather consistently. You can find him making guest appearances on a number of television shows including The Exes, Rizzoli & Isles and Finding Carter, all in 2015. In 2016 he was involved in a project entitled SPECIAL UNIT, a comedy about the Van Nuys PD having to hire handicapped undercover detectives.  He also has something called BORN WITH A DEFECT currently in post-production – a feature that examines his life as a stand-up comic. And speaking of stand-up, this funny dude continues to work on making people laugh for a living and that is a very good thing.

THEN – SUZANNE SNYDER: Suzanne was the pretty girl in the Eighties who appeared in a number of TV shows and feature films. There was the sexy comedy CLASS in 1983. A year later she had a small (uncredited) role in THE LAST STARFIGHTER. In 1985 she had yet another small role in REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS. John Hughes brought her in to play Deb in the classic WEIRD SCIENCE, also in 1985. And finally, we have a little genre fun with her work in Fred Dekker’s comedic fright flick NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (1986). She continued to take on the scary stuff in movies like RETRIBUTION and TOMORROW’S A KILLER (aka PRETTYKILL), both in 1987. The same year that she fought aliens in white face make-up, she was up against the undead in RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD II.

NOW: After a ton of television credits and low budget features, Suzanne apparently took a little time off. Her last feature was a 2013 comedy DANCING ON A DRY SALT LAKE. Perhaps focusing on family as opposed to a career, Suzanne currently lives in California with her four children according to Wikipedia. And judging from her Twitter page, she is a Yoga instructor as well. Considering the number of sci-fi and horror features she did, perhaps a smart filmmaker will convince the lovely Ms. Snyder to return for a fright or two on the big screen. Or perhaps television will once again call out and bring her back into the limelight. Either way, here is hoping she is living a happy life far from the rascally Killer Klowns.

THEN – GRANT CRAMER: Grant Cramer was a bit of a heartthrob back in the day. The actor made his first appearance in a movie that happens to be pretty appropriate for today. In the 1980 slasher flick NEW YEAR’S EVIL, Grant played Derek Sullivan alongside Roz Kelly. The actor took on a couple of Eighties cult flicks including HARDBODIES (1984) and KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (1988). He continued to work in a few B-movies like the action thriller HANGFIRE (1991) and AUNTIE LEE’S MEAT PIES (1992) with Karen Black, Michael Berryman and Pat Morita. In 1994 you could find Grant in LOVE IS A GUN, HAIL CAESAR and the sexy thriller SAVE ME. If you are going to do a New Year’s Eve horror flick, you might as well take on Christmas, and he did with SANTA CLAWS in 1996.

NOW: Mr. Cramer has certainly embraced B-pictures in a big way. From ADDICTED TO MURDER 3: BLOOD LUST in 2000 to RAPTOR in 2001, he clearly feels right at home with all sorts of sleazy shockfests. Recently you could find him taking on the role of Mr. Papyrus in the romantic comedy THE FINAL SONG. What’s next for Grant? Well, you may have heard about this but the Killer Klowns are seemingly coming back. Grant is scheduled to reprise his role as Mike Tobacco in THE RETURN OF KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE IN 3D! That’s right! The next time somebody gets their “block knocked off” it will fly right out into the audience! And I for one am thrilled to see the actor return to this long-awaited (?) sequel. Oh what the hell, I’m pretty damn excited!
