What was once a shark thriller slated to get a direct-to-video release is now an interesting experiment. Last summer, director Johannes Roberts' 47 METERS DOWN was just eight days away from being released on DVD, Digital HD, and On Demand when Byron Allen's Entertainment Studios bought the rights from Dimension Films and changed the release plans – instead of being released on home video on August 2, 2016, the movie will now be receiving a theatrical release courtesy of Freestyle Releasing on June 23, 2017.
Will this delay and theatrical release pay off, or should 47 METERS DOWN have remained a DTV release? We can only wait and see.
Written by Roberts and Ernest Riera, the film tells the following story:
Twenty-something sisters Kate and Lisa are gorgeous, fun loving and ready for the holiday of a lifetime in Mexico. When the opportunity to go cage diving to view Great White sharks presents itself, thrill-seeking Kate jumps at the chance while Lisa takes some convincing. After some not so gentle persuading, Lisa finally agrees and the girls soon find themselves two hours off the coast of Huatulco and about to come face to face with nature's fiercest predator.
But what should have been the trip to end all trips soon becomes a living nightmare when the shark cage breaks free from their boat, sinks and they find themselves trapped at the bottom of the ocean. With less than an hour of oxygen left in their tanks, they must somehow work out how to get back to the boat above them through 47 meters of shark-infested waters.
Mandy Moore and Claire Holt star as the sisters and are joined in the cast by Matthew Modine and JASON X's Yani Gellman.
While we wait for the marketing push to begin for Freestyle's release, a trailer has arrived online for the release Gulf Film is planning for it in the Middle East. This trailer can be seen below and provides an intriguing, thrilling look at the film.
47 METERS DOWN was so close to hitting DVD last year (it was going by the title IN THE DEEP at the time) that screener copies even made it out into the world, and there has been some good word of mouth spread around by people who were able to watch those screeners. I was always on board to see this movie, but the positive reactions it has already received make me even more interested in checking it out.
